Accomodaiton in Erevan

In a week I am travelling to Erevan as a tourist. Could somebody advice on a reasonably nice hotel with double room priced at 60-80USD per night? Thank you in advance. Evgeny

Accomodaiton in Erevan

Congress hotel is nice and friendly but it is about $80 to $85 us per night for a single room. Rooms are very nice and they do have a fitness centre in the Hotel. I think the Congress has a ';pay for two nights get third night at half price'; deal on at the moment so three nights would cost $200 us and would therefore be a average cost of $67 us per night.

Hotels do seem to be expensive in Armenia considering the economy. They may have a two tier pricing structure.. e.g. locals pay one price tourists/visitors pay another.

All in all the Hotel is quite good though and only a short walk to the centre of Yerevan.

From airport to the city & to Nagorno-Karabakh

Hi there,

I am going to Yerevan in December and my flight arrives in the night, something like 2 or 3 am and I was wondering how do I get to the city centre from the airport? Are there any public buses? If no, how much should I expect to pay for a taxi? What is a reasonable price, so that I don%26#39;t overpay?

Another question is, if anyone has traveled to Stepanakert in Nagorno-Karabakh in winter season? I would be willing to go there for 2 days, but I don%26#39;t know how to get there - any buses? How much do they cost? What if to rent a cab?

Thanks in advance!

our tourist%26#39;s opinion

Dear Arthur,

We had a great time visiting your beautiful country thanks to high quality of the service provided by your company and yourself always personally involved.

We got first an efficiency feeling that grown during the accurate but friendly mail exchange to define together and conclude the kind of service we were expecting from you.

The deal on 2 weeks looked indeed perfectly in line with our needs in term of robustness, mobility and price.

Later on, at the end of a long flight, to be welcomed by the Tourorent manager himself with a warm smile at the airport gate at the arrival, in the night of a too early morning turned a pain into a joy.

We will remember this very first day in Yerevan , when we discovered the city with your drive and when you made easy the paperwork to be filled in at arrival, including the visa for the Karabach !

We had a splendid time during the big tour we made discovering Armenia, in deep gorges and high mountains. The car ran perfectly and it was an unending pleasure to move around securely on its wheels.

Every day and especially every morning we had a tough to your precious advises about the good behaviour in driving in the sometimes rather bumpy Armenian roads

One important remark about the false information we read in the guide-books.

To drive in Armenia was never a problem. On the contrary, it was very easy even for us who did not speak Armenian or Russian.

Thanks to the warm welcome we founded with every people we met, each time we were a bit puzzled about some road sign (or their absence) we were immediately helped by joyful and helpful people who often took their time to go with us along the way to be sure that we were on the good track.

Many thanks again to yourself of course and to the Armenian people to have support us in the discovery is this astonishing country to be discovered with no delay (thatʼs always our conclusion when we tell them our Armenia journey).

Best regards

Monique and Eric

General Armenia Info - specifically Yerevan.

Hi there,

I have been considering visiting Armenia for a little while, but need to get more info. Its pretty expensive to get to from the UK, but I hear its pretty cheap once you get there - is this right? I%26#39;ve also heard that it is a very poverty stricken place. Again, is this true?

I%26#39;ll probably be sticking to Yerevan, may do a few trips out of the city if we do go. With regards to Yerevan - what is the city like for entertainment? Are there bars and nightclubs? What are they like? What is the shopping like? And finally, what are the people like? From websites I%26#39;ve seen they always seemed friendly and helpful. Also the language barrier, I don%26#39;t speak Armenian or Russian, but wasn%26#39;t sure if English is spoken.

If I do go it will be myself and another girl who is going, so is it safe for us to travel around Yerevan by ourselves?

Any other useful info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks a lot!

General Armenia Info - specifically Yerevan.

Hi,

It is pretty cheap comparing with London or New York. The airfare from London should not be very expensive. Yerevan is not the only place you want to go. Outside is also very good.

General Armenia Info - specifically Yerevan.

Is it too late to reply? You may be Armenia already.

Anyway, some brief answers to your questions.

Yes, it%26#39;s very cheap for a western European to spend time in Armenia.

Armenia is a poor but stunningly beautiful and unspoilt country.

You must travel outside of Yerevan - go to Lori, take a picnic on a Sunday to Lake Sevan and visit every monastery you pass, each one is unique and worth the detour.

The bars and nightclubs are difficult to avoid in central Yerevan - most of the local population stay out until 3, 4 or 5am on a Friday and Saturday.

The people are extremely friendly, warm and honest.

You won%26#39;t have too many problems speaking English in central yerevan but you may want to hire a guide when you venture further afield.

Armenia is the safest country my wife and I have ever visited. You will be looked at - visitors in some parts of the country are still a rarity - but no one will approach you or talk to you unless you invite them too. Even walking around at nighttime is safe.

Also, buy a copy of the Armenia and Nagorno travel guide that%26#39;s published by Brandt - indispensible.

Hope this helps if you haven%26#39;t left yet!

Hello!

We are also planning to go to Armenia and are particularly interested in seeing Ani and Lake Van. plus Ecmiadzin, Yerevan. Has anyone any recommendations on travel from the UK, accomodation and best times to go?

Many thanks

Well. In part. Fact is in Yerevan you might be astonished to note there are so many HUMMERS, so many S600 Mercedes Sedans, Rolls Royces, BMW SUV%26#39;s, Land Rovers, etc. you will be dumbstruck. There are brand new taxis, fabulous downtown architecture in Yerevan, highrise everywhere yet maintaining traditional street front look. There is an array of fabulous restaurants, inexpensive eateries, markets, and pretty darn good apartments, all be it still rather soviet. That aside I would recommend Yerevan to anyone. A cosmopolitan city with music, art, food, and worlds best brandy. The people are friendly and theft etc. is almost non-existent. Outside the major city of course Armenia is still in major recovery but it is happening. The antiquities of the country, the untouched beauty, landscape, historical sites will blow you away. Italy and Greece have nothing on Armenia. Less crowded, Less expensive, super moments. Take them. Try http://www.armeniaexplorer.com for details of various itinteraries worth looking at. TRAVELSAPIEN loves those people. They have handled some pretty tough critics and won them over handlely. Enjoy

I'm finally going, but need help!!

Hi all.

Armenia is a country I%26#39;ve been interested in for several years, and I am finally getting the chance to go. I%26#39;ve read the other reviews on this site, and others too, but was wondering if you could please help me out with a few questions I have.

Firstly, we%26#39;re going to be heading to Armenia in the last week of October/first week of November. Does anyone know what the weather%26#39;s likely to be like then? I know it will be cold, but is it likely to be rainy/snowy or just cold? And with regards to the weather, does it effect the city much? For example I live in Scotland where we don%26#39;t have the best weather, but for some reason the place seems to grind to a halt when we have bad weather!

Secondly, I know that the water is only on in homes in Yerevan for certain hours of the day (I think I read 2.5hrs in the mornings and 1.5hrs in the evenings). Does this effect hotels as well, or should they have water continually?

Also, what do you think is the best way to travel to Armenia? My options are going on a ';package'; type city break with a travel firm...its a 3 day City Break to Yerevan (doesn%26#39;t give much time for exploring the rest of the country). Its pretty expensive, but they arrange the visas etc and I can fly direct from the UK. Other than that I can book myself online, but I%26#39;m unsure about what requirements are for visas or if anything else is needed. Its cheaper (as I can choose flights that aren%26#39;t direct), but I%26#39;m unsure....has anyone travelled there independently before and its been okay? Or should I really go with a tour operator. If it makes any difference, I haven%26#39;t travelled independently before and haven%26#39;t actually been abroad in over 8 years.

Another thing I am unsure about is If I book online I have the option of hotels or renting an apartment. Hotels are pretty dear there (IMO) whereas the apartments seem much better value for money, but not sure what my best option would be - any advice/tips/reccomendations?

Lastly, this may seem like a silly question, but I like to be respectful to other people. I have a visible tattoo around my wrist (I%26#39;m female) - would this be a problem there? I know here a lot of people pass comment on it (mostly positive), but not sure if tattoos are really not the done thing there (especially for women).

Also any other info/tips you could give me would be fab!

I%26#39;d greatly appreciate any help you can give me. I%26#39;m so excited that I%26#39;m finally getting to travel to Armenia, and just want to make sure it all goes as smoothly as possible!

Thanks!

I'm finally going, but need help!!

Hello,

We (60 +65) went to Armenia for 5 weeks independently for a hiking and exploring trip last year in September. It was the most beautiful trip of our lifetime. Everything was perfect and we were able to see quite a lot , but not everything.

You have to be aware that this trip will need some preparation,es pecially if you don%26#39;t speak Armenian.English is not yet widly spoken, not with the older people any ways. Second language is still Russian.

I don%26#39;t know here to start

You can get lots of information on the internet, sites like

http://www.armeniainfo.am/ can lead to to everything you want to know.

The Tourist information center In Yerevan is very friendly, they go out of their way to help you. There are lots of travel agencies who organize local trips. We did not do buissnes with any of them, but we met some German couples, who were very happy. The only trip with a guide we did on Aragats (4080m) with Avarayr tours. They were extremly nice, competent, helpfuland generous( beeing the old soviet Mountainrescue team)with advice, they did not push anything.

Consult their website for organized trips.

We had two travel guide books:

Armenia with Nagorno Karabagh, Nicola Holding, The Bradt Travel Guide (Excellent!!!) and the newlittle hiking guide Adventure Armenia

Hiking and RocK Climbing. Jeffery Tufenkian and Carine Bachmann(see website)

We rented an appartement for 5 weeks in the center of Yerevan. It was very nice, comfortable and modern( 1 Bedr, kitchen, livingroom. tv.stove fridge,Washing machin) for 25$Us/day. In Yerevan there is no more water and electricity restiction. Outside Yerevan the situation is ok in most places, you have to be tolerant. We stayed in one home in Alaverdi were the standards were very low, but they make up with such hospitality and friendliness.

Lots of places to see can be visited from Yerevan. So we hired a driver for 25$Us/day plus the gas most of the time.In other cases, when we went to the south for a couple of days we took the minibus.

This is an adventure, as the buses are most of the time in not so good shape, they are packed full of people, but if you are willing to take a chance and have the real experience. They are very cheep.

As for the weather, it was still quite hot in September(35) but warm weather is supposed to linger until end of October, exept over 3000m where snow starts in August. We hiked down from Kari Lake to Ambered Fortress on the 5th of October in 10 cm of snow.

As for your Tatoo.....In Armenia everybody non Armenian is spotted. Nobody has Hiking pants with pokete or wears running shoes. Men doen%26#39;t wear shorts Young women are very fashion conscience, very sexy, and always well dressed. Last year there were no bare bellies...but things cange very, very fast.

Yerevan has a multitude of cultural events (cheap) and in summer everybody is in the cafés outside from 11am till late at night. We found it very safe. The only danger....as everybody who has been there.. is to be run over but a car while crossing the street!!!

Unfortunately i%26#39;m running out of time. Maybe, I can come back to you late.... Check the internet...

Pari Pacht (good Luck)

I'm finally going, but need help!!

hello dear

My husband and I went to armenia last august for 2 weeks independently. I got in touch with a travel agent in Yerevan who made a very cheap trip for me with a private driver. You can have a guide who can talk english in the car . We had a flat, very center, modern with water and electricity all the day. 2 bedrooms and even a washing machine in the bathroom. It is not a very good idea to take a bus to visit because the roads are very dangerous and the bus hardly go through a lot of places so a car is much better. Yerevan is very safe as all the country. The food is very very cheap. You can book your flight and a driver will come at the airport and take you in the flat. You don%26#39;t really need someone to visit the town. The small buses are very inexpensive . You can take them anywhere in the town, saying just the name where you want to stop and there are just like taxi and stop everywhere you need.

We have stayed 4 days in YEREVAN in the flat. From there we went with the driver to Garni,Gheghart, Etchmiadzine, Zvartnotz, Aragatz It always took just half a day for these trips except Aragatz so you can visit Yerevan in the same days. You can take the underground, cheap too but do not take pictures in the underground as it is forbidden.

We left to Khor Virap, Noravank ( very beautiful !!), Jermouk. Sleep in Jermouk, but not really worthy to go such a way as in Jermouk, not so much to see.

We then left to Goris and slept in a family home. It was not too bad for one night. The room was comfortable but a nice bathroom with....no water !!

Goris is nice to visit the troglodits (caves)houses. We went to visit Tatev but I am not sure you can get there if it is too much raining because of the road !! We went to Karabagh but had some troubles with the police because we took some pictures we should not take in SHUSHI !! so we did not stay there and went back to armenia. Went to Sevan, Dilidjian.................If you want more details contact me. I will be pleased to help you.

Barev dzez (hello) !

You are in for a wonderful time in Yerevan and Armenia. I have just returned to America after 3 years as a Peace Corps Volunteer in the village of Verin Karmir, near Berd, and I already miss this wonderful country. The weather is on the coolish side in Oct/Nov and it can rain. Bring layers of clothes and an umbrella and you should be fine. Good walking shoes are important since you probably will want to walk around Yerevan.

If you want a really cheap place to stay, I recommend the Envoy Hostel. It is like a dorm - bunk beds and bathroom down the hall - but the price is only 5000 drams (about 12.00 US). It is extremely clean, the beds are comfortable, there are lockers you can lock to store your stuff, but the absolute best feature is that you will meet Peace Corps Volunteers who live in the remote regions and they will probably invite you to visit their villages. Do it! Especially if you have a chance to go to Berd in Tavush Marz.

There are a couple of day tour companies in Yerevan. I took three tours with Hyur (Guest) and was completely satisfied. There is a Metro (underground) - 50 dram, mini-busses called marchutneys - 100 dram and taxis galore 600 + dram, but establish the price before you get in - they might try to rip you off for 1500 dram.

Don%26#39;t worry about the water. Most places have tanks, and I%26#39;ve stayed in 4 or 5 different hotels and never had a problem. BUT DON%26#39;T DRINK THE CITY WATER. Buy bottled water to drink and brush your teeth with.

I wouldn%26#39;t bother with a package tour. Many people in Yerevan speak English and if they don%26#39;t, they%26#39;ll flag down a passerby who does. Sorry I can%26#39;t help about the visa - Peace Corps did all that for us.

About your tattoo - it will be cold enough for you to wear long sleeves so no one will see it. People there don%26#39;t have tattoos, but will be curious. Yerevan is way more cool about this than the villages, but the Armenian people are really very polite.

Yerevan is a very safe city. I have walked around in the early evening as well as all day and never been bothered, but I took the usual precautions. If you go to any of the other larger towns, finding a hotel or B%26amp;B shouldn%26#39;t be a problem at this time of year. Villages usually don%26#39;t have places for tourists to stay, but if you somehow end up in one, you can stay with a family - they love the novelty of a ';foreigner'; and you will be given more food and wine or vodka than you can eat or drink.

I hope this is helpful to you in making your plans. If you get to Berd and meet any PCVs or Armenians, tell them you heard from the ';Amerkatsi who lived in Verin Karmir for 3 years';.

Best of luck for a fab vacation.

Hi,

I will try to provide you with some useful info before your trip to Armenia.

In summer, 2005 I visited Armenia and did a good experiences there.

Weather: The weather is nice at the end of October. People call the golden Autumn in Armenia. But will be better, that you take some warm cloths, since the the temperature ranges and is different in other regions(cooler) comparing to Yerevan.

Water: I think you should not worry about the water. Many hotels have 24 hours running water and private houses and apartments have solved the water-problem, installing cisterns at home.

Visa %26amp; Trip: Currently is the individual tourism popular in Armenia. Many individual tourist make their own tour-plan and come to travel to Armenia with rucksacks(backpacks). For individual tourism in Armenia I will advise you “Georgia, Armenia %26amp; Azerbaijan” book of Lonely Planet. It contains a useful data about guesthouses, tours, about country %26amp; people, including maps and trip advices.

Visa: There is no problem to get visa in Armenia. You can get it directly at the airport after your arrival. You should fill an application and pay about 30USD for 21 days tourist visa. To save a time, you can download the application from internet, fill it and just take with you : armeniaforeignministry.com/consular/…visa.pdf

Hotels are usually more expensive comparing to guesthouses in Armenia. The quality is also different. It depends on your expectations and your preference….

Tattoo: I think there is no reason to worry about tattoo… Armenians are used to meet foreigners everyday That’s an everyday life! Besides people in Armenia are very modern thinking, specially the new generation!

Recommendation: I will recommend you to visit Dilijan town(Tavush Region), the little Switzerland of Armenia. There is a nice Guesthouse(Dili Villa) where you can stay. They organize also sightseeing tours in the region. For more info you can check also my goList at:

tripadvisor.com/GoListDetail-g293931-i6137-M…

I hope my info were useful for your trip to Armenia.

For more info you can contact me any time. I wish you a nice trip to Armenia %26amp; unforgettable memories…

With best Regards

Matrica

I realize that this poster has already been to Armenia and back by now, but for those people who are reading old posts to gather information, here%26#39;s a few tips. If you%26#39;re staying in Yerevan and don%26#39;t mind spending around $150/night, the Marriott is THE place to stay. Many of the beds at other hotels are like bags of cement (no joke). And the breakfast is sumptuous. If you%26#39;re a spoiled American (or other nationality), you%26#39;ll appreciate this hotel. If you venture up to Lake Sevan, you%26#39;ll want to stay at Harsnaqar Hotel. It is close to Yerevan and it is perched on a hill with beautiful views of the lake. Unfortunately, they have the aforementioned cement beds. But it is worth putting up with for the location. And did I mention water park? Yes, they have a huge pool and two big waterslides. If you%26#39;re travelling to Armenia in the summer, you%26#39;re going to appreciate this feature. We had been referred to the Tufenkian hotel and stayed there one night. But it was a disappointment. It is located on a very unscenic part of the lake. It is actually not on the lake, but back in the scrub. There appeared to be no other restaurants or activities in the area. It is very isolated. The staff wasn%26#39;t particularly friendly. And although they clearly put a lot of money into the decor, they must not have had any money left when it came time to buying the beds (again with the bags of cement).

You will see a lot of statues, churches, monasteries, memorials, etc., but make sure you visit the small towns and visit the local people. It will renew your faith in humanity. For all the hardships and poverty these people endure, they are the kindest and most hospitable people on the planet. They barely have roofs over their heads but they will want to invite you into their homes and feed you. Those are the memories you will take home with you.

Hello,

It has been awhile since my wife and I were in Yervan. We adopted our little princess from Armenia and went to get her in October of 2000. We were there from Oct 17th to Oct 24th, the weather was pleasant and I remember wearing long sleeves and a light jacket in the evening. However you might want to bring a medium to heavy coat also.

The people were very friendly and the food outstanding. My son and I walked everywhere. Cabs are plentiful especially around Republic Square. There is a great restaurant in the basement of the Hotel to the right of the fountain in the square.

We made a mistake of listening to our adoption agency of not eating the fruit when we first got there, it smelled marvelous and when I finally gave in, it was the sweetest fruit I have ever eaten.

Make sure you go the great cathedral that is being rebuilt. We are looking forward to when we can take our daughter back to show her, her country.

reputable tour company?

Hello All,

I am an armenian american and I am trying to plan a trip to Armenia for May 2008 with my sister (ages 24 and 21). I have backpacked independently before for 8 months around Europe and Turkey, however, now i really would just like to go on a packaged tour (i am with my sister, and we will kill each other if it is just the two of us 24 hours a day).

Any suggests for a reputable tour agency? We would like to take a 2-3 week trip around the country including the area near Mt Ararat. We are most interested in architecture and the culture, meeting other armenians, nightlife, and history. We dont mind budget accomodations as long as they are clean, and we like a good combination of free time and arranged tours of preferably 15 people or less.

any help would be great

Thank you!

reputable tour company?

Yasas,

I%26#39;m not sure if you are looking for a tour operator out of the States or in Armenian however, my daughter will be travelling with her 8th Grade Saturday School classmates to Armenia this summer and will be staying at ';Parev Doon';. Check out their website at www.parev.am

TaloBalo

reputable tour company?

Hello

I have just returned from yerevan last week, My husband and I have been to Armenia 3 times since October 2006 and are returning again October this year. We always book with Hyurservice. Hyurservice can arrange day trips and also tailor made trips, however we have only ever been on the day trips which were extemely interesting and very cheap. They have a website where you can check out apartments etc. Another company is Menuatours, we have not had any dealings with them, so cannot recommend their company. I know that there is a new hostel opened in Cental Yerevan which is the Envoy Hostel that is apparently very clean and very reasonable priced. They also have their own website.

I hope you have a lovely time when you go I am sure you will find Armenians very warm and friendly as we did. Good Luck !

Kathy Allahverdi, Scotland UK

I happen to be in Armenia at this moment in time. After 5 visits over the past 5 years the Country is in motion to become one of the newest interactive cultural find in many years. Good point about a realiable tour operator. There are many but many are also really local travel agencies without experience in the inbound circuit. If you are looking for operators on the North American side there are but a few such as SIMA Tours and BELL TOURS in Canada. As to localized or online direct good ones are Armenian Explorer or Advantour as they are called, Sima Tours, Elitar Travel and in the north Shirak Tours in Gyumri. For an all round choice of experiences Armenian Explorer is noted as tops. You likely would not go wrong with any of these. They all have websites so check them out for the flavor that suits you.

thank you everyone, and Bob I will look at those websites! I cant wait!!!

NJSteph24, we just got back from the area and maybe you%26#39;re there now :-) If anyone else is interested, I used Seven Days travel agency in Yerevan. We like to stay in guesthouses/3* and splurge on private car/driver and guide. This option probably won%26#39;t keep you from killing your sister, but it%26#39;s better than wanting to kill the other tour members and maybe you have to be a little more civilized in this more intimate setting of just four people :-)

You can contact them at www.welcomearmenia.com We had a wonderful, intelligent guide. They arranged their furnished apartment for us - cheaper than a hotel, in a great area, and, naturally, much bigger (kitchen, bedrooom, bathroom, living room). Several grocery stores and restaurants in the area. We had Karine arrange a car to the Georgian border (since we didn%26#39;t want to take the train). Our driver throughout our stay and for this 5-6 hour drive was just fantastic. He was one of the best drivers we%26#39;ve ever had; let%26#39;s just say that if everyone drove like he did, there would be a lot less road rage and far fewer accidents. The overall program was pretty good. You will probably find that it%26#39;s cheaper to book a private tour this way than a package tour through a US travel agency.

The best company for indivuale tours to Armenia it is Travel Club Armenia. But web page of Travel Club in russian, www.travelclub.am

I am from Moskow, and booking also 3 years by Travel Club.

Due to work and school, I ended up having to push my trip back to next year.. and I would like to add moscow and/or St. Petersburg in. So... does anyone know of joint armenia/russia tours? Thank you very much also any other advise of itineraries for 2-3 weeks in moscow/st. petersburg, armenia would be greatly appreciated

Just beginning to think of a trip to Armenia.

Winter sounds like a bad time to go - would April be OK?

Also - can one stay in Yerevan and take day trips to places of interest, or do you need to tour - and if so what are hotels like outside Yerevan?

Last question - anyone familiar with Armenian Royal Palace Hotel? Doesn%26#39;t seem to have been reviewed here (or anywhere else). But it looks good on the website.

    Airport Yerevan

Hallo, are there public busses or taxes driving from airport to city Yerevan. Pay in dollars or euro possible? Where is Touristinformation in the city? Thank You.

    Airport Yerevan

The public busses to and from the airport and within the city will take take any currency. Keep in mind that it%26#39;s probably best if you convert your money to their local currency ASAP. It%26#39;s called the dram. A ride within the cities routed small van-pool system will cost about 100 drams and a ride to in from the airport to the city-square will cost about 300 at the most! They also have a cute little subway system that is about 50 drams in one direction. Taxi service is cheaper if you call in advanced. Usually it is about 120 a kilometer. Min 500 drams. I hope that helps.

    Airport Yerevan

Who knows you might already have traveled. Anyway of course there are Taxis at the Airport. Bad luck. Get a friend or pre-arrange a pick up. The competition is so fierce at the Airport and you really do not know who is a real taxi or not. Do not forget most flights arrive like around 3 AM or so and at that time you need to be diligent like anywhere else in the world. BE CAREFUL . As to bus not really. Get your agent or your hotel to arrange pick up from airport. IF you are still afraid to trust locals then try http://armeniaexplorer.com. They will take good care at a reaonable rate and full trust. I know that for sure but as a precaution I endorse no one. Things always change. Check out my BLOG http://travelsapien.blogspot.com

There you have information on Armenia and links to Armenia Explorer. My advise. Read the testimonials. They are more accurate than advertising. Enjoy your Journay.

    Welcome to Armenia

Jack Check out your Google. There are many entries to link on including official sites in Armenia with tons of information and of course the opportunity to book direct. Firstly if you have never traveled to Armenia or have little experience in such matters USE a Tour Operator. You will NOT be dissappointed if they are good ones. There are a few. American Express is located in Yerevan, the major hotels have direct booking, there is an information centre, there is http://www.armeniaexplorer.com and http://www.armeniaholidays.com etc. etc. There is LOTS and LOTS of information. Check out TRAVELSAPIEN too. Been there a number of times and can speak highly of the Country.

I am traveling to yerevan in October, I will need to hire a cab to take me to my apartment and then pay for the apartment on arrival. I am told I can only pay in drams. The problem is I am arriving from the US and my flight will not arrive untill after 9 pm. My question is.... Is the currency exchange booth open late hours? Or where else can I do this. Any help will be useful. Thanks!

    Money exchange

Dear westmatt, you will find Exchange offices in Airport (even at night), and also, you will find it everywhere in the city. It is equally safe in exchange offices and banks. Good luck with your trip.

PS. By the way, even if you have US$, it is not a problem to negociate with taxi driver or someone else to pay in US$ or got an advice how and where you can exchange your money.

    Reputable tour companies?

    Thank you!

I have read a lot about Armenia but I don%26#39;t even know what all I need to go over there. Well, I know I need a passport.. but to be honest, that is all I know of. 19 Year old off to see the World :)

    Hi, Amber,

I visited Armenia in 2001, my boyfriend visited in 1999 and 2001 to stay with a British journalist friend. The people are very friendly, but extremely poor. It is quite easy to get around usually you hire a driver, your hotel should be able to organise it. I%26#39;ll forward your post to our friend who still lives in Yerevan, he%26#39;ll be able to give you more information than I can. It is a beautiful country, full of interesting architecture. June.

    Visa for Armenia

Hello I have read the forum re: visas.

I am going to yerevan next week.

Is the info up to date i.e. can i still get a visa on entry to Yerevan airport and/or is the application form I downloaded from the 2006 link still relevant?

    Help!

    Thank you

    Visa for Armenia

fyi to all, for US citizens, as of two weeks ago, you can get the visa at the airport for $50 or 15,000 drams. There is a change booth and ATM there, but the ';commission'; for changing travellers checks is about $10 for the transaction.

    My Armenian trip....

    hello,

I am thinking of visiting Armenia next year January/ February and wondering if a 5 day vac would do me any good..

I would love to stay in the city center of Yerevan - does anyone have an address or phone number to an apartment I can rent?

And are there any direct flights from London to Yerevan?

I would be so grateful for any help at all !

    Thank you.

    M

    My Armenian trip....

Hi, I have been to Armenia 5 times in the past 2 years. It is a time capsule of post soviet influence. Very different pace, men all stand around the streets and look at women. Even with that, the city is very safe and people are friendly once you smile and try to talk to them. They are not used to tourists.

During January and February, there will only be city points of interest to explore. There are multiple out of the city points of interest, but there is no real road maintenance or relaibility of getting out of the city for tours at that time of the year. If the weather is mild, you may have more of a chance to leave the city limits. There are monestaries and churches dating back to 600A.D. and before. There is a greek temple that was rebuilt by the Soviets from the helenistic times before the Armenians adopted Christianity around 300 A.D. With the greek temple, there is a recontructed roman bath house with a mosiac from the time period.

You will find plenty to do for five days.

There are also multiple tour companies you can call and they can arrange for an apt for you to rent. I stayed there this past summer and was able to rent from an owner of apt directly and stayed for less than $20 per day. Apartments for rent are easy to locate on the internet if you just google ';Yerevan tour companies';. Once you get to their sites, they have information about apartments for rent.

The food in restaurants is excellent. They are artists there and they love to dress the plate in interesting ways with garnishes.

Taxi%26#39;s and mini buses are the usual way to get around the city. If you are in semi-good physical shape, you can easily walk the whole city.

The city is loud, they like to honk their car horns if they are mad, angry or saying thank you, so it is a seranade of sorts from early morning to late into the evening.

There is also a subway, (metro) for you to use to get to more distant locales in the city. About 20 cents American for a one way ride.

The main languages are Armenian and Russian. They have developed a custom language combining Armenian and Russian together. If you only speak English, you will also be able to get around pretty good. I speak only english and always manage to find someone who can intepret if I can%26#39;t communicate with smiles and sign language. Pointing works well in stores for what you want.

Things are getting more expensive there, the dollar and euro have continually fallen since my first visit in the fall of 2004.

Of course, like all countries, there are a good share of those who would like to seperate you from your money. When they see a foreigner, they immediately increase their prices on many items.Taxi drivers who do not use a meter in the cab will charge you double of what the fare should be if you can%26#39;t speak the language. There are a couple of taxi services who speak english and if you rent thru a tour company, they will help you with that.

On Saturday%26#39;s and Sunday%26#39;s there is a craft fair in the main part called the ';Vernasage';. You can purchase jewelry, crafts, paintings, woven rugs, books, pets and a multiple other items. It is a must see if you are planning on visiting the city. They are such talented people and deserve many good things.

I hope you have a delightful time there. If I can help you any further, please post again and I will try to help.

    Have fun!

    Any thoughts would be appreciated!

I have probably replied far too late....

But I was in Armenia September 2007. I met a lady who had flown with Aeroflot 30 times, and never had any problem. Also, in one restaurant we met two or three Aramavia pilots before and after a return trip to Moscow. They had no fear of their company.

    Kind regards.

    flights to Armenia

    Hi!

Thank you for your response. I actually never went to Armenia. My husband did, though. His only problem was that his flight from Yerevan to London was cancelled the day before and they did not have another flight going out for another 2 days! (British Airways) He ended up buying another ticket on another airline because he wanted to get back to NYC. That is good to know, though, that the Armavia pilots were not concerned.
