General Armenia Info - specifically Yerevan.

Hi there,

I have been considering visiting Armenia for a little while, but need to get more info. Its pretty expensive to get to from the UK, but I hear its pretty cheap once you get there - is this right? I%26#39;ve also heard that it is a very poverty stricken place. Again, is this true?

I%26#39;ll probably be sticking to Yerevan, may do a few trips out of the city if we do go. With regards to Yerevan - what is the city like for entertainment? Are there bars and nightclubs? What are they like? What is the shopping like? And finally, what are the people like? From websites I%26#39;ve seen they always seemed friendly and helpful. Also the language barrier, I don%26#39;t speak Armenian or Russian, but wasn%26#39;t sure if English is spoken.

If I do go it will be myself and another girl who is going, so is it safe for us to travel around Yerevan by ourselves?

Any other useful info would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks a lot!

Hi,

It is pretty cheap comparing with London or New York. The airfare from London should not be very expensive. Yerevan is not the only place you want to go. Outside is also very good.

Is it too late to reply? You may be Armenia already.

Anyway, some brief answers to your questions.

Yes, it%26#39;s very cheap for a western European to spend time in Armenia.

Armenia is a poor but stunningly beautiful and unspoilt country.

You must travel outside of Yerevan - go to Lori, take a picnic on a Sunday to Lake Sevan and visit every monastery you pass, each one is unique and worth the detour.

The bars and nightclubs are difficult to avoid in central Yerevan - most of the local population stay out until 3, 4 or 5am on a Friday and Saturday.

The people are extremely friendly, warm and honest.

You won%26#39;t have too many problems speaking English in central yerevan but you may want to hire a guide when you venture further afield.

Armenia is the safest country my wife and I have ever visited. You will be looked at - visitors in some parts of the country are still a rarity - but no one will approach you or talk to you unless you invite them too. Even walking around at nighttime is safe.

Also, buy a copy of the Armenia and Nagorno travel guide that%26#39;s published by Brandt - indispensible.

Hope this helps if you haven%26#39;t left yet!

Hello!

We are also planning to go to Armenia and are particularly interested in seeing Ani and Lake Van. plus Ecmiadzin, Yerevan. Has anyone any recommendations on travel from the UK, accomodation and best times to go?

Many thanks

Well. In part. Fact is in Yerevan you might be astonished to note there are so many HUMMERS, so many S600 Mercedes Sedans, Rolls Royces, BMW SUV%26#39;s, Land Rovers, etc. you will be dumbstruck. There are brand new taxis, fabulous downtown architecture in Yerevan, highrise everywhere yet maintaining traditional street front look. There is an array of fabulous restaurants, inexpensive eateries, markets, and pretty darn good apartments, all be it still rather soviet. That aside I would recommend Yerevan to anyone. A cosmopolitan city with music, art, food, and worlds best brandy. The people are friendly and theft etc. is almost non-existent. Outside the major city of course Armenia is still in major recovery but it is happening. The antiquities of the country, the untouched beauty, landscape, historical sites will blow you away. Italy and Greece have nothing on Armenia. Less crowded, Less expensive, super moments. Take them. Try http://www.armeniaexplorer.com for details of various itinteraries worth looking at. TRAVELSAPIEN loves those people. They have handled some pretty tough critics and won them over handlely. Enjoy
